Chapter 21: Mindfulness at work
Restricted access

Mindfulness involves one being present in the ‘here and now’, awareness of one’s surroundings, sensations and feelings in a non-judgmental manner. Several studies have demonstrated the efficacy of mindfulness in clinical situations, for instance pain management, alleviating depression and anxiety. More recently a focus has turned to the utility of mindfulness in the workplace and studies to date are highly indicative of the utility of it for employee relations, job performance and reduced costs related to absenteeism and quitting behaviours. In this chapter an overview of mindfulness, its efficacy in clinical and workplace situations as well as a suggestion that short-term online interventions can be equally effective as longer-term face-to-face interventions are presented.
