International migration has a great capacity to influence development in both host and home countries. In addition to altering the demographic profile of the populations in the two countries, migration also leads to the movement of tangible and intangible resources across countries in the form of remittances. This chapter focuses on the role of such remittances in the nexus between migration and development. The impact of migration and remittances on development is important and complex, and spans many aspects. This discussion is themed under health, education and housing; poverty and inequality; self-employment and entrepreneurship; financial inclusion; financial intermediaries; macroeconomics; and conflict and politics. In the present context of globalisation where migration is becoming an increasingly common phenomenon, it is important to maximise the positive effects and minimise the negative effects of remittances on development.
