This chapter explores the significant and potentially far-reaching role of the European Union (EU) in protecting children in migration. Lessons can be learned by other jurisdictions and agencies from the successes and failures of the EU in this field. It explores the ability of the EU to establish binding common legal obligations towards children in migration across a region and forge cross border mechanisms between national state authorities of its Member States. In particular, it examines the implications of the recent adoption of a comprehensive EU Communication focussed on children in migration.
