Protecting children – including growing numbers of unaccompanied migrant children – in an increasingly difficult and risky migration climate is a pressing challenge. Advocates in non-governmental organizations, academia, UN agencies, and government have had some success in developing a children’s rights framework, yet discrepancies now exist between this framework and the framework that applies to adult migrants. States encounter difficulties in advancing cohesive migrant children’s policies, with some misalignment between those advancements (which can be protective in nature) and children’s migratory goals and desires. Emerging policy proposals to repair the global migration framework can support a more coherent child protection system.
