This chapter explores Australia’s inhumane and degrading treatment of asylum seeker children as a result of prolonged, mandatory detention. Such policy developments have caused undeniable harm to children who have sought protection, breached international human rights and challenged Australia’s ongoing ability to defend children’s rights. Exploring recommendations from civil society and government commissioned reports, this chapter highlights alternative policy directions and why the current policy is in need of repeal. To date, the Australian government has done little to change its policies affecting asylum seeker children. As a result, Australia’s reputation on the international stage has been damaged, at the same time as Australia is bidding for a seat on the UN Human Rights Council.
