Estimations show that there are around six times more migration movements within West Africa than toward other regions, Europe included. Some of these migrants are children who are unaccompanied. Many of them leave their home to reach a neighboring town or country, pushed by social or economic hardship or attracted by better opportunities elsewhere, if not caught in trafficking systems. These children on the move are particularly vulnerable and at risk of exploitation on the way or at the destination. The 15 countries of ECOWAS developed an inter-country mechanism enabling better protection and transnational reintegration of these children, following a procedure of care based on the best interest of the child. The West African Network for the protection of children (WAN) aims at finding sustainable solutions for each and every child referred to this network.
