An examination of the politics and provisions of the state’s education for unaccompanied minor asylum seekers in Turkey, the ethnography gives new insights into two distinct learning strategies of schooling and labouring employed by Ali and Hanif, two Somali unaccompanied asylum seeking youth in Turkey. Agency in relation to learning is gauged from a perspective of transformation factoring in survival in shared contexts and constructs of uncertainty. The research has been partially conducted within a state care facility for unaccompanied minor asylum seekers in Istanbul and partially outside of the city during a year’s fieldwork.
