This chapter gives an overview of sustainable supplier selection. Supplier selection is a strategic activity of a buying company through which they identify, evaluate and select the best supplier(s) among from a set of potential suppliers. Traditionally, price (together with some other criteria such as quality and delivery) has been a dominant criterion to make this decision. With theincreasing importance of social and environmental concerns, companies are increasingly incorporating the three dimensions of sustainability_ that is, economic, social and environmental _ into their supplier selection decision. This chapter presents a process view of this important decision and shows how a company might go through several activities in order to have and implement a successful and long-term sustainable supplier selection program.
