Logistics activities are inherently resource-consumptive and contribute to global social, economic and planetary health. Practical, sustainable logistics practices often differ substantially from optimal ones, reinforcing the need for additional work and research in the area of sustainability in logistics. This chapter provides an introductory overview to sustainability in logistics, using the planetary boundaries framework to guide sustainability efforts in the five logistics work systems. The authors provide basic theoretical support and literature to ground the reader, and examples of sustainability in the work system areas. Future research opportunities and trends are intended to pique the reader’s continuing interest and provide a reference for scholarly and practical advancement in the field.
