Chapter 31: The EU and Latin America
EU external relations with Latin America are characterized by region to region interaction and support to the regional organizations of Central America (SICA), South America (Mercosur/UNASUR) and the Andean region (CAN). This chapter analyses the exact nature of these region to region relations, which are rich in terms of size, depth, actors and levels of interaction involved. As will be argued in this chapter, the EU–Latin American interregional relationship is quite innovative and refreshing from a foreign policy (analysis) point of view and can best be described as beyond economics, beyond institutions, low interdependence and (only of) mutual benefice through refined and targeted interregional cooperation.
