Chapter 24: Pivoting from Obama to Trump in the Indo-Asia-Pacific
Restricted access

President Trump has inherited a complex and challenging cluster of issues in the Indo-Asia-Pacific (IAP) region, a situation that is made more difficult by China’s growing influence and assertiveness. Between 2011 and 2015 the Obama administration made considerable progress with its Pivot campaign in the IAP region, but by the end of Obama’s second term the Pivot had lost much of its momentum and focus. This chapter argues that, in spite of the setbacks, the foundational premises of the Pivot are still valid and President Trump would be well advised to restart the Pivot campaign in the IAP region. The author relies upon a recent report by The Asia Foundation to identify some of the policies that President Trump should pursue in the IAP region, whether or not he is prepared to officially restart the Pivot.
