This chapter reviews the main stages of Chinese outbound tourism development. It identifies three waves of Chinese outbound tourists in the evolution of Chinese outbound tourism. The chapter highlights the current third wave of Chinese outbound tourists as more independent, upper class and middle aged. The chapter further provides some detailed accounts of the motivations of Chinese outbound tourists in the three waves and offers discussions on some future development trends.
