Chapter 10: Ecotourism development in China
Restricted access

Ecotourism development in China has grown to a substantial scale in terms of the large number of protected areas, decades of development history, large volumes of tourist arrivals and receipts. The market potential is huge. Under the prevailing discourse of sustainable development, ecotourism will become a major and important form of tourism. In terms of tourism products, tourism market, environmental protection, environmental interpretation and community participation, ecotourism development in China remains at the primary stage. The overall environmental conditions for developing ecotourism in China remain good; however, environmental damage risks and hazards exist. The environmental interpretation system has been established in many attractions, but is yet to be further improved. Community participation has generated admirable economic benefits, but is not sufficiently deep and in most cases community residents are in disadvantageous positions in ecotourism development.
