Restricted access

The topic of satisfaction in residential areas like urban deteriorated neighborhoods has an extra sensitivity and complexity compared to the other urban neighborhoods due to factors such as high population density and concentration as well as centralization on the places without a solid organizational relationship with the city structures. However, today, looking at the place is not an algebraic view as it was before, it is getting close to an approach of a dynamic and interactive relationship between the human and geographical environment. Such an approach emphasizes social, cultural and psychological values of space. The aim of this study is to analyse the influential socioeconomic characteristic of satisfaction and the perception of residents in Ab-Kooh neighborhood, a deteriorated area in Mashhad. Data collected from the questionnaires were investigated by using statistical analysis methods in SPSS software. The results show that the level of satisfaction is low in the study area. Meanwhile, individual and household characteristics play an important role in residents’ perception and attitude toward the quality of neighborhood environment. Variables such as age, duration of inhabitancy in the neighborhood and education level are highly correlated with individuals' perception of the quality of their neighborhood environment, so that, with boosting the education level, the satisfaction with the quality of the environment comes down. Moreover, satisfaction increases with duration of inhabitancy in the neighborhood.
