Staying put at any stage of the doctorate, or after its completion, may have many advantages for the doctoral student, not least familiarity with academics you have worked with productively and with your university’s support structures. The university may offer many opportunities for the future and it may be a recognised centre for research and teaching in your field. It may be conveniently located too. Nevertheless, there are numerous reasons for changing universities. This chapter is written for students thinking of changing institutions during their doctorate and for those seeking to further an academic career after completion of their PhD. Canvassing many of the rationales for changing universities at different stages of a doctoral candidature, as well as their benefits and drawbacks, it draws on the author’s experiences as a seasonal supervisor of doctoral students at three universities and as a student who changed universities during his own PhD candidature.
