Chapter 46: Rewriting and overcoming writer’s block
Restricted access

Many students experience writer’s block while writing their thesis. A hiatus in writing may also present in writer’s avoidance, for example carrying out household tasks, running errands, or checking out library books that won’t be read until a much later date. Additionally, students tend to underestimate the impact of real-life events on their academic progress. This chapter seeks to assist students in overcoming these problems by exploring four techniques designed to help you towards the finish line. Beginning with identifying a dedicated writing space, it continues through persevering despite failure, developing a support system, and finding a personal formula for success. Throughout, the author’s own experiences are recounted, including the successful completion of her PhD journey. The chapter concludes with three lessons for PhD students.
