Chapter 3: The Society for Human Resource Managements Diversity and Inclusion Global Best Practices Instrument and Global Diversity Readiness Index

This chapter summarizes and analyzes the Society for Human Resource Management’s Global Study of Diversity and Inclusion (EIU, 2009). Developed by researchers at the Economist Intelligence Unit, two instruments were designed to help corporate executives identify best practices related to diversity and inclusion, as well as understand the how different countries faced diversity and inclusion challenges. The first instrument, the Diversity and Inclusion Global Best Practices Instrument, is a combination of a quantitative online survey of 546 senior executives of companies worldwide and more than 40 interviews with senior executives in North America, Europe, Asia and Latin America. The second instrument, the Global Diversity Readiness Index, consists of country-based data assessing five dimensions related to diversity and inclusion and results in a ranking of countries by ‘diversity readiness’. We discuss strengths and weaknesses associated with both measures, their potential application, the usefulness of the information generated, and recommendations for improvement.
