Chapter 5: Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services: the Integrated-PARIHS framework
Restricted access

The integrated Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services (i-PARIHS) framework has evolved from over 20 years’ experience and empirical study in the field of implementation practice and research. i-PARIHS is a conceptual framework that proposes successful implementation of evidence-based change in health care results from the active facilitation of an innovation with the intended recipients in their local, organizational and health system context. In its current iteration, the theoretical underpinnings of the framework are more clearly articulated and a preliminary model for operationalizing the framework is defined. The authors start the chapter with a description of the historical roots of i-PARIHS and the work undertaken to develop the framework. They then describe the main constructs of i-PARIHS, including their theoretical antecedents, and a facilitator’s toolkit to operationalize the framework. Finally, the chapter illustrates examples of applying i-PARIHS and outlines an ongoing work programme of further developments.
