Restricted access

The third sector encompasses an array of nonprofit organisations and social enterprises. These organisations have a distinct set of social, environmental or cultural objectives including strengthening economic and social participation. This sector is experiencing significant change and development, and better research and understanding of sector activities, organisational theory, workforce development, management and culture is critical. This chapter reviews the role and impact of third sector organisational culture on organisational and employee outcomes. Key issues for nonprofit leaders thinking of assessing and measuring their culture are explored and the relatively new cultural typology of 'philanthropic culture' is introduced. This overview provides an opportunity for nonprofit leaders to consider the benefits of measuring organisational culture and take strategic actions to influence the culture positively to support their workforce, and better achieve the organisation's goals.
