Digital technologies are increasingly dominating our lives and online contexts now provide both critical research sites and methodological opportunities for researchers. This chapter, therefore, introduces some strategic ways in which qualitative educational research can be conducted in online contexts and ways in which specific online methods can be implemented. The practicalities of undertaking online interviews, online focus groups and online observations are discussed in detail and the different ways in which social media can be used in qualitative research introduced. The ethical implications related to online research and the importance of conceptualising digital technologies and online contexts in social, rather than technologically deterministic, terms are emphasised.
