Chapter 16: Sustainable data management
Restricted access

What is the place and role of sustainability in the emerging data-driven economy? How can organizations implement sustainable data management practices, while continuing to pursue novel business opportunities afforded by data management? This chapter offers some introductory answers. It opens with an analytical overview of current thinking on data management and a discussion of the key components and sources of (un)sustainability in data management. Building on this understanding, the chapter introduces a CURLS (Constraints, Utility, Risks, Liability, and Span) framework that can guide organizations toward sustainability-driven data management strategies. The chapter further presents a data analytics case study to illustrate how the CURLS can be utilized in practice and showcase the implementation of sustainability-driven data management. The chapter concludes with actionable managerial guidelines for achieving and maintaining sustainable data management.
