Markets and businesses may be viewed either in terms of enabling the take/make/waste economy or as a source of innovation and technological change. This paper discusses the challenge of engaging graduate level environmental science students, typically on the cusp of their professional pathway, to examine sustainable business as a more dynamic interplay involving business, government and civil society. Are entrepreneurs, corporations, and local business communities viewed as potential stakeholders in sustainable solutions or only as an ongoing part of the problem? Integrative course projects will be described that serve to challenge key assumptions and encourage reformulation of basic premises preparing environmental students to become co-collaborators in developing future sustainable solutions.
