Discourse about teaching sustainability has mainly focused on methods, techniques and activities taking place in the classroom and within the students’ curriculum. Nonetheless, education for sustainable development (ESD) is a complex process and extra-curricular activities (ECA) on campus can be of great importance. As ECA are not directly related to course syllabi, they have a greater potential to address diverse topics and audiences and provide opportunities for a multidimensional learning experience. Two different cases from Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics are presented. These cases suggest that ECA can serve as a source for deeper interest by offering an up-to-date, nuanced knowledge of ESD and sustainability practices in research, work-life and in the society at large. Extra-curricular activities have the potential to provide role models and to motivate the students to think critically and creatively about the practices they are going to encounter in their future work-life.
