Chapter 30: Free online spaces for learning and awareness in the sustainability field: the Universidade da Coru-a (Spain) project
Restricted access

Since the 1960s, many organizations have warned of the deterioration that the ecosystems suffer due to human activity. Within this framework, education becomes an essential pillar to making the problem visible and correcting it. Specifically, universities play a fundamental role in incorporating sustainable development in the criteria of future professionals. This chapter shows one pioneer project carried out by the Universidade da Coru-a (UDC, Spain) to achieve this goal: The Sustainability and Big Data massive online open course (MOOC). This course emerged as a space to raise awareness and promote sustainability in three dimensions: environmental, social and economic. The participants have shown a high degree of interest in the issue and positively evaluate this type of education. Hence, this chapter seeks to present the MOOC as a project for exploring new educational tools, as well as serving as a means to publicize and increase the visibility of sustainable development.
