Chapter 12: Concluding thoughts: new philanthropy, age-old problems
Open access

As Northern philanthropic foundations working in the education sector, particularly those from North America, extend their reach and activities into the Global South they are encountering many of the same problems that have historically plagued the development sector. This chapter examines some of these challenges that echo those faced by the aid sector, including the North–South divide, issues related to collaboration, the growing influence of the private sector and a need for greater transparency. After examining each of these areas, the chapter concludes with suggestions for future research on global trends in philanthropy and education that could contribute to strengthening the sector on multiple levels.
