Chapter 18: Against all odds: a career success story of a woman of lower-class origin in Austria
Open access

Despite the free access to higher education in Austria, people of lower-class origin and women still experience career disadvantages. Yet, as career research focuses on individual agency, it often neglects contextual factors that produce social inequalities. Studies that do target inequality in careers mostly focus on diversity dimensions such as class background or gender in isolation rather than taking the interplay of these factors into account. Considering intersections of gender and class influences, this chapter presents the career story of a woman of lower social class background who has achieved steep upward social mobility and reflects on context factors supporting her career success all along the way to her current position as CEO of a well-established international company.
