Chapter 6: Measuring the values of civil society in the Middle East and North Africa region
Open access

A crucial element in understanding civil society is in the value structures of its actors. The current state of civil society suggests researchers need to re-examine and update frameworks to examine the diverse range of values among civil society's many actors. Within the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, the need for such a framework is especially relevant. This chapter examines the current gaps in creating a comprehensive framework for measuring value structures, considers the impediments in developing such a framework in MENA and suggests ideas on how researchers can move forward based on my fieldwork in Iraq.
