Chapter 6: Is construction work becoming more industrial and off-site? Digitalisation in the construction sector in Germany
Open access

Based on two qualitative case studies, the chapter develops the thesis that construction work gets closer to industrial work due to digitalisation. Particularly in prefabricated construction and in the production of preliminary products the rationalization benefits of digitization are taking effect. In both case studies, technological innovations, such as the increasing use of automation/robotics in prefabricated construction or the increased use of BIM by building materials manufacturers, are a powerful driver. Also, a shift in the value chain can be observed. Modular construction, which is used in prefabricated house construction, profits from digital technologies, hence value creation shifts from the construction site to the industrial production of building parts in the factory.
