In this chapter, Colin Jones provides the background context to the chapters in this opening section (chapters 2 to 5). Identifying concerns about the effectiveness of modern-day education systems and the increasing challenge learners face in adjusting to ever-present change are positioned as driving the need for educators to develop innovative approaches that support learner agency. The nature of the approaches by Rebecca White, Gustav Hägg, Doan Winkel and Jones himself are outlined, with the respective uniqueness of each explained.
