Chapter 6: Nature use as multi-identity: neither leisure nor work
Open access

This is the third of the four chapters in this section which discuss different specific binaries that exist in relation to the overarching nature-culture binary. The chapter focuses on the leisure-work binary, which mirrors the landscape-productivism binary in its classification of nature for different uses apart from a naturalised understanding of nature. The chapter illustrates that these, just like the landscape-productivism conception, can be seen as highlighting uses that commodify nature. Examples are taken from, for instance, tourism and the "tourism bubble" through which the tourist is to escape work. Finally, the chapter also illustrates contradictions to the leisure-work binary.
