Chapter 2: Classification and dichotomy
Open access

Classification, or categorisation, is a crucial part of how we identify ourselves in the world. However, by doing this we are also creating understandings of the world: a map that may fit better or worse with the territory. This chapter discusses classification as a part of historical "scientific thinking" and how it is today questioned as part of the thinking about language or classifications as sign systems. Categorisation, or classification, can be seen as creating its own reality so that, for instance, people expect experiences to conform to something they have seen on TV or read about.
