This ground-breaking book makes visible the global counter-movement for environmental justice, combining ecological economics and political ecology. Using 500 in-depth empirical analyses from the Atlas of Environmental Justice, Martínez-Alier analyses the commonalities shared by environmental defenders and offenders respectively.

For over ten years I have worked with the team that started the EJAtlas (and also began to write articles and books based on it), namely Leah Temper, Daniela Del Bene, Arnim Scheidel and many, many others. They are listed in the text, footnotes and references of this book. The EJAtlas is a collective endeavour of academics and activists.

For the preparation of this book, I am very grateful also to a small team in the last four years: Elisa Poch de Feliu, Aiora Zabala, Marina Requena, Abel Grimaldos, Ana Adán, Arielle Landau and especially Nina Limacher.
