This chapter focuses on dysfunctional behavior that could impact an organization's reputation and possibly its bottom line. Indeed, this entire book is concerned not with what is legal versus illegal. It is up to lawyers and legislators to wrestle with issues of legality. Bullying and harassment are types of dysfunctional behaviors that unfortunately have become increasingly significant problems in our workplaces. Because of the frequency of these behaviors and the costs associated with them, it is important to educate ourselves and others to distinguish these behaviors. We need to recognize them when we observe them and when we observe them so that we can avoid them. And of course, we need to see that all organizations take action to reduce or hopefully eliminate these unproductive types of behavior.
