Students often resist many of the ideas and facts about social inequality. It is incumbent on instructors to recognize this in helping students see the centrality of social inequality in their studies and in the world today. Reference to social inequality, and growing inequality, is pervasive in today’s news and public discussions of current events, partly in recognition of how inequality can threaten democratic society. Class discussion and student writing are at the heart of the pedagogy that emphasizes student learning as much as what might be taught in a social inequality course or one that examines inequality in a course such as race and ethnic relations, gender studies, globalization, political sociology, or criminal justice. In offering many examples and illustrations of what can be included in the study of social inequality, this book can be read selectively depending on the needs and interests of the instructor and those of students.
