This chapter provides an up-to-date review of current indigenous language revitalization strategies. Discussing past and current promising practices, ongoing challenges, and directions for future actions, the chapter serves as an accessible resource for individuals, communities, activists and policymakers. With a focus on current initiatives, the chapter describes contemporary strategies in Canada, the United States, and around the world. These strategies include the use of existing documentation materials, curriculum development, post-secondary programmes and partnerships with universities and researchers. Special emphasis is given to immersion and language schools, with a survey of the benefits and disadvantages of current language learning methods in the classroom, in bilingual schools, and in child and adult immersion settings. The chapter surveys the work of leading scholars in the field while also drawing information from Indigenous organizations, indigenous activists and government bodies.
