Academics and executives can make a difference if they forge a new community around the research and practice of global leadership and its development. This chapter is a reflection on one effort at building that community – the 2013 Global Leadership Summit hosted by Northeastern University’s Global Leadership Initiative. It identifies and distills several themes that emerged during the various keynote speeches, panel discussions, thought leader sessions and reflections as well as in the informal conversations in the hallways and over meals. The summit was an effort by Northeastern University and the Global Leadership Initiative to make a difference by stimulating action. We sought to make a difference in several ways. First, we explicitly encouraged an open dialogue between academic researchers and executives around the practice of global leadership and the development of global leaders. Second, we strived to foster networking and the development of relationships that could lead to partnerships between researchers and practitioners. Our intent was also to transform mindsets. Though participants grappled with a wide range of topics, several in particular emerged: What is the context of responsible global leadership? How much does context matter? How essential is it to be explicit about “responsible?” How can we develop responsible global leaders?
