Altuğ Günal

In this chapter Günal examines why Cyprus is important to Turkey and what it expects from any final outcome. In doing so, the chapter explores, and questions, the geopolitical/strategic importance of Cyprus to Turkey and Turkey’s expectations from the Turkish Cypriots, and looks at how Turkish actors view the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (whether as a military base, colony, friendly state, or one nation in two states). Finally, Günal ponders how Turkey views the final status of Cyprus and how it goes about achieving its vision (recognition, annexation, re-unification, federation, dependence), as well as Cypriot and international reaction to Turkish designs.
