This chapter aims to provide an introduction to the concept of social franchising. Early stage social franchises emerged in the early 1990s and most occurred in the health sector. Today, social franchises are found in both developed and developing markets and span a wide range of sectors. The chapter expands on definitions of social franchising and also aims to differentiate between social franchising and social enterprise as well as social franchising and microfranchising. It also expands on the role of players in social franchising, when social franchising is an applicable strategy and implementation considerations. Finally, the chapter concludes with some examples of social franchises and suggestions for further research as well as implications for practitioners.
