Intuition is needed for recognizing the contextual patterns that allow professionals to spontaneously access their tacit knowledge bases. This chapter discusses the contribution of mental simulations to the development of intuition because the relationship between the two concepts has not yet been explained. An interview study of crisis response workers explores their intuitive decision-making and their use of mental simulations for managing new and complex situations on the basis of inadequate or contradictory information.
