Entrepreneurship is driven by creative and transformative forces, shifting the boundaries of what is deemed possible. Preceded by significant industrial dynamics, the perception of the university as a key component for economic development has given rise to the concept of the academic entrepreneur. In this chapter, Organ discusses how entrepreneurship takes shape within a unique university context and recommends that scholars adopt a ‘role frame’ when studying the actions and behaviors of individual entrepreneurs. Only then will we find that academic entrepreneurs are also institutional entrepreneurs, reinvigorating the traditional function and value of higher education.
