While diversity is critical to public sector performance and legitimacy, public administration research has lagged behind other fields in understanding the role of diversity in public organizations. This chapter reviews the research on diversity in public administration, including representative bureaucracy, diversity management, and public sector organizational behavior. We conclude by suggesting areas and methods for future research particularly focused on diversity management, gendered agencies, and intersectionality.
