This chapter examines alternative sources of data for researching NGOs in a rigorous fashion, including discussion of some of the shortcomings of existing data sources. In addition, the chapter proposes some solutions to the commensurability and generalizability challenges intrinsic to international NGO (INGO) research from existing work that future researchers might adopt to improve their own research. Increasing conceptual clarity and transparency in the methods used to measure NGOs will help advance the NGO research community.
