This chapter introduces the book A Research Agenda to Event Management. The book discusses key topics of event management research over ten chapters. The chapters cover core topics that have been emerging within event management research over recent decades and are appearing in the current academic debate. A brief exposé of challenges for events in today’s society and the last decades of event management research describes the development of a field from its origin in economics and business administration research to the multi-disciplinary field that it is today with influences from, for example, sociology, politics and cultural studies. In the book, the chapters are divided into three overarching themes: Events in Society, the Event Consumer and the Event Organization.

Participant events are growing in numbers and importance for destinations. The growth of participant running and endurance events (marathons, triathlons, trail runs, fun runs, etc.), participant team sport events (youth and amateur tournaments in a wide array of sports), computer festivals (e-sports and gaming conventions), carnivals, choir festivals and food festivals are examples of this. The chapter defines participant events based on event consumers’ activeness, co-creation of experiences and interaction. Then, literature is reviewed and discussed with a focus on five central concepts related to participant events: involvement, serious leisure, event-travel careers, event portfolios and subjective wellbeing. Finally, a research agenda for participant events and the active event consumer is proposed, recommending fruitful theoretical perspectives, promising methodological approaches and new contexts for further research.
