This chapter integrates teams into the discussion of SHCRs by focusing explicitly on the critical role of team motivation in the emergence enabling process through which individual KSAOs transform into SHCRs. In exploring team motivation, the chapter also challenges the assumption of goal alignment in teams. We begin by arguing that discussions of SHCRs are inevitably discussions about teams. Next, we review relevant team motivation theories to show how motivation lies at the center of team functioning, and therefore the development of SHCR. We then introduce a framework for understanding the effects of goal (mis)alignment within and across teams, both vertically and horizontally. Finally, we discuss theoretical perspectives that can potentially accommodate the reality of goal (mis)alignment in teams, and offer suggestions about how future theory and research can build on those perspectives to better understand team motivation.
