Multinational companies (MNCs) emerged and developed in various ways and different timeframes, in part reflecting the specific political, economic, institutional, cultural and industrial context of the parent country. These contextual characteristics also influence the evolution of corporate strategy and culture, as well as patterns of international expansion. In this case study, we look at the transformation of a collapsing Chinese state-owned enterprise into one of the world-leading MNCs and contemplate its strategy and implications for people management.
