Abstract This chapter provides an overview of the Convention Concerning Fishing in the Black Sea adopted in Varna in 1959, and examines the role it played in fisheries in the Black Sea region for the period of its duration, until 1993. It also pays special attention to the Draft Legally Binding Document (LBD) for Fisheries and Conservation of Living Resources of the Black Sea, as well to other attempts to adopt a new legal text applicable to fisheries in the Black Sea. All these texts are critically explored and possible future developments in fisheries management in the Black Sea are examined.
