The proper understanding of the family business phenomenon requires the adoption of a methodological approach that embraces the complex intertwinement of different social systems. The configurational approach is particularly appropriate for this aim, and within this approach, Fuzzy Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) is a technique that has great potential for the description, explanation and interpretation of family firms’ characteristics and dynamics. This chapter illustrates the main features of the fsQCA technique within the configurational approach, and discusses its range of applications to the family business field.
