This chapter reviews relevant GTM studies, and illuminates the method’s capacity to explicate organizational hegemony, intersectionality in the workplace, and often silenced and unheard voices and experiences. We contend that GTM has the capability to explore social processes of inclusion and exclusion, the conditions under which these processes emerge and the impact of such processes on the social experience. We discuss in detail the iterative processes and components of GTM that contribute to honoring the experience of marginalized groups. We offer a figure to help researchers understand GTM application and the critical decisions scholars encounter in research. Several elements of this method sensitize researchers to their implicit bias: positionality, pre-conversations, diverse coding teams, reflexive memoing, and checking interpretive findings and reporting out to participants and relevant community members. Grounded theory methodology’s focus on a conceptual understanding of social phenomenon can lead to theory building grounded in the particular human experience of exclusion and inclusion.
