Inclusion and exclusion processes are conceptualized in this chapter as situated practice in organizations to open up an analytical space for more dynamic views on differentiation processes. From a methodological point of view, it is challenging to gain empirical access to situated practices as routines. The documentary method is presented as a methodology for researching situated practices as routines in relation to career experiences in organizations. It is shown how this methodology may contribute to emphasizing aspects of incorporated knowledge as well as explicit rules guiding behaviour. The documentary method allows for research on persistence and changes in inclusion as well as exclusion processes in organizations, because the implicit effects of exclusion processes are included in the focus of analysis. To make implicit or taken-for-granted knowledge visible enables researcher to learn more about the implicit mechanisms and processes of organizational inequalities.
