This chapter explores the notion of unseen pressures on academics. It takes the stance that New Managerialism Philosophy (NMP) principles have led to changing work demands that clash with traditional academic norms, culture and practice. Changes in work demands have explicit impacts (e.g. what work is done, how much time is spent on activities), but this chapter explores the unseen pressures. It does this through the lens of the impact of NMP on academic wellbeing, showing that work-based pressures that adversely affect wellbeing also impact productivity, motivation and engagement.
